Upcycled Baby Quilt

Hey Everyone! Today I started out making some pot holders from an old sweater. I was cutting squares from an old Polo cotton crew neck sweater and I just kept going until I had a small pile of squares and no more sweater left. I thought "this could make a cute baby quilt". So this is what I went with. I cut 8 denim squares to go with the sweater squares. Decided this wasn't big enough. Need more sweater squares. Since the sweater was gone I found a knit polo. The squares were similar in weight and I cut 4 squares from the knit.  All I had to do was to sew the denim squares together and put the two sides together with quilt binding. I didn't add any batting to the middle. The denim makes these so heavy that I thought it might be too much. When I had the sides sewn together I used an embroidery needle and some embroidery floss and sewed a single X in each sweater box, tacking both sides together. I knotted the ends and left some length in the strings for some detail. Then I just had to take it outside for the photo session!

When I sewed all of the squares together, the denim side ended up being larger so I had to trim some edges. That's why the squares look a little wonky.

I love the weight of these denim quilts.
I'm really going to have to make one in queen sized.

Oops, I had a bit of a stitching problem here.

I like the checkerboard pattern.

Can you see the polo horse in the middle square? I like this quilt binding because it is the same color as faded denim.

I'm really enjoying these denim quilting projects, I see many more in my future.

I love upcycled projects. What a great baby blanket! With the denim on one side it will stand up well to much use. I could see it as being a perfect choice to bring along to the park.

Love this quilt! I have some sweaters that need to be upcycled, and this is a great idea. Thanks for the inspiration.
